Playing can sometimes aggravate muscles that are damaged by other things, so don't always assume the source and effect are related! I've had no problems since my new mattress arrived!!
P.S. My old teacher (a brass band player over here in the UK) always frowned on stands. he said if a tuba wasn't hugged, it wouldn't love you and respond ! ;-)
