I just moved up to a large shank euphonium last Fall. I tried a VMI and a Besson 4-valve noncompensating. One thing I found was that these instruments are a lot freer blowing than the small shank euphoniums because they usually have a much larger bore. This is a good thing, but it also means you use more air so it takes a small period of readjustment. Also, depending on the horn you buy, there is a much wider variety of true euphonium mouthpieces available, so call on my friends Mike Russo and Jack Saltzman at the Woodwind and Brasswind (www.wwandbw.com). They have a deal where you can order up to three mouthpieces with a 20% downpayment and send back the ones you don't want. Good Luck, but most of all have fun. Buying a new instrument is a tremendous rush!!! See Ya, Fritz
