For those who never leave their small town and disassociate themselves with music entirely, the benefit may not be as great. For those who continue to be active in music, the rewards will accumulate. Whether you are attending a concert and hear a work commissioned by Phi Mu Alpha or are performing that piece, you can take great pride in the fact that your dues helped make this musical contribution possible. You may also discover the person in the chair next to you shares a common experience. Every group I have played in since college has had at least a half dozen Sinfonians in it. Once Sinfonia is mentioned six or seven guys chime in with their chapter name, membership card or a song. (including my current bandmaster) If just drinking and buying friends is your goal then Phi Mu Alpha may become a disappointment. If you goal is "to encourage and actively promote the highest standards of creativity, performance, education and research in music
in America" you will be rewarded many times over for your work. Nothing in, nothing out.
