I owned a 1970 Cutlass 350 with high compression and a four-barrel carburetor. Yup, nine miles for each gallon of premium gas, when premium was 100-octane.

But it was nine MILES to the gallon--miles that fed the soul. I can go two and a half times as far on a gallon of what they call gas these days in the Sub...Suu....S...Outback, but those miles are desultory by comparison. And I would not have wanted the Japanese alternative in those days--their legendary reliablity was still in the future in those days.

And the Cutlass would give you the excitement stopping and turning too, with four-wheel drum brakes and a weight of 4200 pounds on bias-ply tires.
