My car in graduate school and the 5 years of marriage before the children and the tuba/string bass was a subaru DL wagon. It was small enough to be economical, 4 doors and a hatch, and on-demand 4 wheel drive. I was cheap and used the 5 speed manual transmission, and would still be using it today if there wasn't 2 monster children in the family. (A 6 and 4 year old both over 3 feet tall).

I had the back seat split professionally from a bench to a 60/40 set-up to accomodate a string bass neck.

I remember going to a symphony audition with myself, and three others. We fit a tuba (hirsh. 5v rotary C, a william lewis 4/4 string bass, and a french horn in the back.

Good luck

Tom
