I think that is a very good choice! You will at least have a tuba you are comfortable with and that can really help to keep things simple. If you feel that the 184 isn't as light in the quintet as you may want, you might try experimenting with some mouthpieces aimed at giving you better response and control. Personally, I can't imagine a CC tuba that has better response at the mouthpiece than the 184. I have a theory that you get that response at the cost of projection, which is why I don't recommended the 184 for large ensembles. Maybe someone will do the math and come up with an acoustical basis for that phenomenon and we'll all understand tuba design better. Anyhow, good luck in your practice!
