I studied with Rex Martin for a year and believe I learned a great deal. He is 100% from the Jacobs' school of thought. His approach to teaching is heavily based on sound and time. You will learn to either love or hate metronomes.

When I was there I got to hear him play a good deal, but that was in part due to ITEC happening there during the same year. He plays much during lessons as a means of giving examples. Also in Chicago are all of the other obvious opportunities to listen to other examples of world class musicians, jazz, blues, symphonic, chamber, etc.

You really should take an opportunity to drive up to Chicago and have a lesson to get a feel for how he operates. With him, I believe you will have a very clear idea of what to expect after only 1 lesson.
