I agree with Joe here. The 3/4 Mirafone 184 would make an excellent quintet horn. It has fast valves, good intonation (if you're careful when picking them), a light sweet sound, and not alot of projection which makes it perfect for chamber music. Also, they have good response so when you try to play softer, it will be pretty comfortable.

By the way, the Alabama Symphony audition was in 1983, I think, and I was there too. In fact, it was the first time I had made it into the finals of an audition. James Jenkins is one hell of a good tuba player and is currently in the Jacksonville Symphony. What a drag to finally win a job and then have the orchestra go belly-up!
