Or even better, check out players who make their living playing jazz on the tuba, like Howard Johnson. There's them that allow themselves to fall back on educating (or studio gigs, or dixieland, or...), and there's them that pursue the true dream. Choose.

True, but his method was completely pattern-based. Rich's philosophy was that if you knew 20 licks in 12 keys, you're a jazz player. Sort of an "anti-spontaneity" approach. I know; I studied from Rich.
