Chris,

Don't worry about being able to play softly on the Cerveny 601. Sure, it's a monster on the FFF side, but it has a very gentle, sweet side at ppp. You CAN use this horn in quintets and as a solo instrument, but its strength is as a large orchestral or symphonic band tuba.. In my opinion, dynamic range has as much to do with the player as it does with the horn. The biggest problem with the 601 is its size and weight. (At an arthritic age 63, I had a hard time carrying the thing to and from rehearsals and concerts.
If you are a large person, and young, you wont have a problem.)

I have praised the Cerveny 601-5MR more than a few times on this BBS. And no, I don't own stock in the company. The horn sells itself to people who try it. It is one fine tuba, along with many other good ones out there (most of which cost much more).
