Get one of your tuba playing bro's and take your instruments out to a large field away from buildings etc. and listen to each other play. You'll hear the plain or pure sound of your instruments. Then listen to them in a well designed music hall and you'll see what a big effect the room has on your sound. By practicing in a small room the sound is compressed and it might make your trumpet playing friend think he's putting out more sound than he really is...? Just a thought.
