I can say that I never noticed any differences in sound whatsoever between identical gold or silver mouthpieces - only that I still own the silver ones and the gold ones have long since gone into the trash. I'm not a metallurgist, but obviously different chemical reactions are at play here and you should make sure you don't have any adverse reactions before you plunk down an extra 50 bucks for gold plating.
