It would require some coating to prevent surface corrosion, but if your thoughts on reducing unwanted vibrations hold water (and I personally agree with you), then it would be worth trying cast iron. For you experimenters, there is a product available from most steel supply houses called Dura-Bar, that costs around $1 a pound here in Canada (that would be about 65 cents in REAL money!). Locally it is available in diameters ranging from 1.5" to 20"(!) Just in case you wanna go crazy and start machining a whole bell for your "Neptune" or what have you...
